10 things to love about the Blackbutt Avocado Festival

It’s a Millennial’s dream - Australia’s only avocado festival!

Held on the second Saturday of September each year, the Blackbutt Avocado festival is a celebration of the delicious avocados grown around the timber town of Blackbutt, 100km west of Caloundra.

If you are wondering what avo-loving activities you can 'avo go at, look no further than below.


AVO TASTINGS

Where else can you try avocado icecream and avocado cheesecake? The festival is a great excuse to spend all day eating avos! Yum!

STREET PARADE

Kicking off the festival is the Ken Mills Street Parade in Blackbutt’s main street from 11am. With avo-themed floats and lots of dressed-up participants, the colours, music and entertainment is bound to delight young and old. Then head down to the Blackbutt Showgrounds at the end point of the street parade and see all the spectacular floats up close.

COOKING DEMONSTRATIONS

Memorial Hall is Avo Central for all things avocado. Here, you will discover why avocado is such a versatile food. Cooking demonstrations by celebrity chef Jason Ford will make your mouth water. And check out the crafting displays in the hall that show off the talents of local residents and artists in the Avo-Go crafting competition. The creativity and talent is excellent!

AVO GROW TENT

Learn about avocados and their growth cycle, enter a world of fertilising, grafting and pest-control that will leave you with a better appreciation of how those yummy avocados get to your table. Or better yet, enable you to grow your own wonderful avocados! The Avo Grow Tent features displays, demonstrations and talks by avocado experts.

AVO GAMES

Test your skills at the avo toss, the avo roll, avo juggling, the avo strongman/woman contest, avo seed golf, guess the variety (there are 14 of them!), and a guacamole-making competition. But, we promise, no avos are hurt in the games! (Sacrilege!)

AVOCADO DROP TOMBOLA

Something you’ll never do anywhere else in the world is play Avocado Drop Tombola. At 2pm at the festival, a parachutist will jump from 1,000 metres and land on a giant avocado-shaped target on the arena of the Blackbutt Showground. Place a marker in the arena for a chance to be chosen to win when the parachutist lands.

FOOD STALLS AND WINE ALLEY

The food stalls and wine alley are certain to keep your belly full and your energy levels high with a delicious selection of avocado-inspired foods and local wines.


MARKET STALLS

No festival is complete without a chance to do some shopping at market stalls. There’ll be handcrafted products from all around the region - high quality woodworking, clothes, plants and other products for your garden - lots on offer for those looking for a bargain, a present, or to treat themselves.

XXXX WOODCHOP AND WOODCUTTERS BAR

The XXXX Woodchop and Woodcutters Bar is at the Showgrounds, so there will be plenty of exciting action to see right through the day as woodchips fly. The woodchop competition harks back to Blackbutt’s days as a timber town. One of woodchop’s world champions is a local man from Blackbutt!

LIVE LOCAL MUSIC

The day will be filled with live music from local musicians, so sit down with your avo ice-cream and enjoy the festival atmosphere!
